Basically, the infrared is responsible for bouncing off light which the camera receives and then translates into images. As an added bonus to the longer wavelengths used by infrared light, it means it is capable of penetrating through dust, smoke, and fog.
The best thing about infrared security cameras is that they are not entirely intended for nighttime viewing alone. In fact, this night vision capability is just an added feature to regular security cameras which means these night vision capable security cameras can be used as regular security cameras during daytime.
